Get ready for a thrilling ride as we dive into the explosive ending of Task Episode 6! SPOILER ALERT: This article contains major spoilers for Task Episode 6, so proceed with caution if you haven't watched it yet!
In a gripping showdown, some of the show's beloved characters meet their tragic ends. But amidst the chaos and sorrow, Task Episode 6 leaves us with a glimmer of hope, a twist that suggests a victory for Robbie Prendergrast, played by the talented Tom Pelphrey.
Early in the episode, Robbie and Tom Brandis find themselves in a fierce battle against Jayson, Perry, and the Dark Hearts. While Tom engages in a brutal fight with Perry, Robbie, carrying a duffle bag filled with drug money, is pursued by Jayson through the woods. After an intense exchange of gunfire, Robbie makes a daring move: he throws the bag into a rushing river, leaving Jayson in pursuit.
The fight between Robbie and Jayson reaches a deadly climax. Fueled by their enmity, they engage in a brutal brawl. Robbie gains the upper hand, but just as he's about to claim his victory, Jayson stabs him, leaving Robbie's body limp. Jayson stands over him, knife in hand, ready to deliver the final blow. However, Tom arrives just in time, having defeated Perry, and Jayson flees. Despite Tom's efforts, Robbie succumbs to his injuries, bleeding out in the backseat of a car, his final moments filled with memories of his brother Billy.
So, Robbie dies, but the story takes an unexpected turn. Perry and Jayson eventually find the bag of cash in the river, but it's empty. The money was never in that bag; it was on its way to Maeve. How did Robbie plan this intricate deception? And how did Task manage to deliver such a heart-stopping finale with a single, powerful shot?
Task Episode 6 reveals that Robbie's plan was more brilliant than anyone could have imagined. He lured the Dark Hearts to the cabin as a diversion, knowing he would face Jayson and ensure the money reached Maeve and the kids. He collaborated with Shelley, who split the drug money into two bags, one for her escape and the other for Maeve. Thus, the episode ends with Jayson and Perry realizing they've been outsmarted, Maeve becoming financially secure, and a single shot of a content Robbie swimming in the quarry.
But when did Robbie conceive this masterstroke? When did he realize he might have to make the ultimate sacrifice to secure a better future for Maeve and his children? Tom Pelphrey, who portrays Robbie, believes it was during the scene at the truck depot when Robbie tried to arrange transport to Canada. Losing his temper and almost blowing his cover made him realize his plan was fragile and he might need a backup.
"By the end of this, we love him so much, and you feel like he has left some sort of legacy for his kids. That isn't all bad," says Salli Richardson-Whitfield, director of Task Episode 6. Brad Ingelsby, the showrunner, has crafted a story where our love for Robbie is earned, making his tragic end all the more heartbreaking.
Pelphrey himself admits his bias, but he loves Robbie and his noble intentions. He is thrilled that Ingelsby added a final shot as a "moment of completion," a bittersweet button to the episode. This shot, taken from the quarry flashback, was not in the original script but was added in post-production, showcasing Ingelsby's meticulous attention to detail and his deep understanding of the story.
As we anticipate the finale, we're left with seven episodes of Task, each filled with twists and turns. While Robbie may have won this battle, the Dark Hearts are still after their money, and Brandis now knows about Grasso's betrayal. There are loose ends to tie up, and we can't wait to see how it all unfolds.
Task Episode 7 premieres next Sunday, October 19, on HBO and HBO MAX. Will Robbie's legacy live on? Find out as the thrilling tale of Task continues!
